Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by WWII history and want to move beyond classroom narratives to the messy, dangerous aftermath of Nazi defeat.
  • You loved the Killing series format and want that same page-turning momentum applied to real historical hunts and espionage.
  • You're interested in justice and accountability, especially how survivors and determined investigators pursued closure for unthinkable crimes.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fiction to narrative nonfiction, or you find Bill O'Reilly's political style off-putting.
  • You want deep archival analysis or academic rigour. This is popular history, not scholarly work.
  • You're looking for graphic descriptions of Nazi atrocities. The book focuses on the hunt, not the camps themselves.

About this book

Killing the SS follows the hunt for Nazi war criminals in the years following World War II. As the atrocities of the Third Reich came to light, many perpetrators fled using a sophisticated Nazi organization designed to hide them. Some were quickly apprehended, including SS leader Heinrich Himmler, while others escaped. The book tracks the pursuit of major war criminals including Josef Mengele, who conducted medical experiments at Auschwitz; Martin Bormann, Hitler's personal secretary; Klaus Barbie, known as the "Butcher of Lyon"; and Adolf Eichmann. O'Reilly and historian Martin Dugard chronicle the efforts of diverse "Nazi hunters"—a French husband and wife team, an American lawyer who served on D-Day, a German prosecutor, Israeli Mossad agents, and a death camp survivor—who spent decades tracking down SS fugitives across the world and bringing them to justice. Written in the style of the Killing series, the book presents these historical events with a concluding revelation.
