Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical biography that centres on real people, not fictional romance, and want the messy details of how actual couples navigated privilege and conscience.
  • You're drawn to stories about the Gilded Age and New York history, especially ones that move beyond the Vanderbilts to reveal lesser-known figures who actually mattered.
  • You appreciate narratives where wealth and status are just the setting, not the point. You want to read about people who used their position to challenge the world around them.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a novel. This is meticulous history based on research, letters, and documents. It reads like narrative nonfiction, not fiction.
  • You want a straightforward love story. Their marriage is central, but the book splits its focus between their personal relationship and their very different public lives and work.
  • You prefer bite-sized biographies. At 351 pages with deep historical context, this requires patient, engaged reading.

About this book

Love, Fiercely tells the true story of Edith Minturn and Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes, a New York society couple depicted in John Singer Sargent's painting Mr. and Mrs. I.N. Phelps Stokes. Growing up together on Staten Island among the Astors and Vanderbilts, they inhabited a world of mansions, balls, and European travel. Edith's grandparents built the world's fastest clipper ship, while Newton's family owned much of Murray Hill. Beyond their privileged lives, both became dedicated reformers. Newton preserved New York history and published a six-volume series of Manhattan maps and views. Edith was sculpted by Daniel Chester French for Chicago's Columbian Exposition. Together, they advocated for New York's poor and powerless while maintaining a strong marriage. The biography follows their story from the Berkshires to 1890s Paris, exploring how their love for each other matched their commitment to social reform during the Gilded Age.
