Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald tells the story of Zelda Sayre, a seventeen-year-old Southern belle who meets F. Scott Fitzgerald, a young army lieutenant, at a country club dance in Alabama in 1918. Despite her father's disapproval of Scott's lack of wealth and prominence, Zelda marries him after he sells his first novel, This Side of Paradise, to Scribner's. They wed in the vestry of St. Patrick's Cathedral. As the Jazz Age begins, Scott and Zelda become celebrities. Scott's scandalous novel and Zelda's bold fashion choices and wit attract widespread attention. They travel to New York City, Long Island, Hollywood, Paris, and the French Riviera, where they join the social circle of the Lost Generation, including Ernest Hemingway, Sara and Gerald Murphy, and Gertrude Stein. The novel depicts the couple's early love and happiness, as well as the conflicts and hardships that later strain their relationship.
