The Lesser Dead

The Lesser Dead follows Joey Peacock, a vampire who has spent forty years as an adolescent in New York City. In 1978, he maintains a routine of hunting at night and sleeping during the day in the tunnels beneath the city's streets, feeding on unsuspecting victims in places like Central Park, taxi cabs, and apartments. Joey's existence changes when he encounters a group of child vampires hunting in the subway system. These creatures are unlike him in ways he cannot fully understand, and their presence signals a shift in the balance of power among the undead inhabiting Manhattan's underground. Their arrival threatens the safety of both the vampire community and the city above. Christopher Buehlman's novel blends elements of horror with literary sensibility, set against the backdrop of a dangerous 1970s New York City.
