About this book

Anthony Davis and his partner Chaz are the only real people in a simulated city of 20 million. Sent there by court order, they investigate what happened in the real world 10 days ago so that hidden evidence can be located and brought to light in the actual city today. Within this re-created Snapshot of May 1st, Davis and Chaz hold ultimate authority. Their badges allow them to bypass any obstruction and override the civil rights of the artificial inhabitants around them. The crimes they are assigned to investigate seem routine until they discover the results of a mass killing—one their precinct headquarters orders them to ignore. They refuse the order. As the hunt intensifies, the stakes become clear: though the artificial inhabitants have no future once the Snapshot ends, there is no guarantee that both detectives will leave the simulation alive.
