About this book

In 1949, WWII veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison and sent to Poca City on parole. He must follow strict conditions: report regularly to his parole officer, avoid bars and alcohol, find employment, and stay away from women. Violation means returning to prison. Archer's search for work and a drink leads him to a local bar, where he is hired to collect a debt owed to powerful businessman Hank Pittleman. The task proves complicated. The debtor refuses to pay and holds a grudge against Hank; Hank's mistress has her own agenda involving Archer; and both Hank and Archer's stern parole officer, Miss Crabtree, watch him closely. When a murder occurs, police suspect the ex-convict. Archer must use all his skills to find the real killer before the crime sends him back to prison.
