Tess is dealing with the aftermath of a car crash that left her sister-in-law, Torrie, in a coma and made her the guardian of Torrie's infant son, Levi. When a woman appears at Tess's door claiming to be Torrie's estranged sister and Levi's rightful guardian, the situation becomes complicated. A second stranger then arrives with the same claim. The novel opens with Tess regaining consciousness in her damaged car after the crash. She has a bleeding disorder that causes her to bleed heavily from even minor injuries—a condition she inherited from her father. As she realizes Torrie was in the passenger seat, the events leading up to the accident come back to her. She had gone out to dinner with Torrie while her husband Josh stayed home to watch Levi. This is the standalone sequel to If She Dies.
