Perfect for you if...

  • You love stories about resilient underdogs who face real hardship with humour and heart, not saccharine sentimentality.
  • You want historical fiction that doesn't feel like a school assignment, with vivid 1930s detail that actually brings the era alive.
  • You appreciate books where a young protagonist's voice—their wit, their rules, their survival instincts—drives the whole narrative.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced plots with constant action; this is a journey story that takes its time and values character over incident.
  • You find Depression-era settings depressing rather than compelling, even when handled with warmth.
  • You're looking for contemporary coming-of-age stories rather than historical ones.

About this book

Set in 1936 Flint, Michigan, this novel follows ten-year-old Bud, a motherless boy who sets out on a journey to find his father. Bud carries a suitcase of personal items and has written his own guide called Bud Caldwell's Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and Making a Better Liar Out of Yourself. Bud's only lead is a set of flyers advertising Herman E. Calloway and his band, the Dusky Devastators of the Depression—a clue his mother left behind. Determined to track down this mystery man, Bud embarks on his search, facing obstacles including hunger and fear along the way. This novel won the Newbery Medal and the Coretta Scott King Award. Christopher Paul Curtis is the recipient of the Coretta Scott King–Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement.
