About this book

The second Armand Gamache mystery, set in the picturesque village of Three Pines in Quebec's countryside during winter. The village is preparing for a traditional country Christmas when CC de Poitiers is found dead—electrocuted in the middle of a frozen lake in front of the entire village during the annual curling tournament. CC de Poitiers was widely disliked by her husband, lover, daughter, and the village residents alike. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec is called to investigate. The circumstances are puzzling: CC de Poitiers was killed by electrocution in a public setting, yet no one witnessed anything. Gamache must determine who could have committed such an unusual murder. As Gamache investigates, he uncovers dangerous secrets beneath the village's idyllic surface. The Quebec winter is both beautiful and deadly, and the villagers are reluctant to reveal themselves. Gamache also discovers that darker threats are emerging—some directed at himself.
